On Sunday, May 18th, we are honored to have Master Teacher Laryea Addy (pronounced Lie-ye Ah-dee) of Ghana coming to our community to teach both a drum and a dance class.  He will be at the Berkshire Pulse, 410 Park St in Housatonic on Sunday May 18th.  Drum class will be from 11:30-12:45, and dance class will run from 1-2:15. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke, heart failure and kidney failure. 8th Annual “Arlo Guthrie’s Historic Garbage Trail” Walk to Massacree HD

On Sunday, May 18th you can participate in the 8th Annual walk to raise money and awareness for Huntington’s Disease.  The walk begins at 10:00AM from The Guthrie Center, 4 Van Deusenville Rd., Great Barrington (on the corner of Division St.) and ends at Theresa’s Stockbridge Cafe on Main St. in Stockbridge.

The walk is 6.3 miles with fun water stops at every mile including love beads, ice cream, photo ops at the “town dump” and “police officer’s station” in Stockbridge, free sandwiches and cookies at Theresa’s (the former Alice’s Restaurant)and a ride back to The Guthrie Center in VW Microbuses.

Klezmer Concert to Benefit Historic Synagogue more info

The Klezmer Band The Knaydels will perform on Sunday, May 25th at 6 pm at the First Congregational Church, Stockbridge MA.  The concert, called A Dash of Joy, A Pinch of Tears: Music from the Melting Pot, is raising funds for the continuing renovation of Ahavath Sholoms 100-year-old historic synagogue building on North Street in Great Barrington.

On Exhibit at the Norman Rockwell Museum

"LitGraphic: The World of the Graphic Novel,” featuring visual narratives by 24 historic and contemporary illustrators, through May 26, 2008.

The permanent collection includes more than 70 works by Norman Rockwell. Norman Rockwell’s 323 Saturday Evening Post covers are on view. Rockwell’s studio is open May through October.

Berkshire Outdoor Adventure Teens (BOAT) Middle School summer program

BOAT is a 4 week leadership development, environmental education and service learning summer program for 13-14 year olds

The BOAT program is a collaboration between the Housatonic River Museum and Berkshire South Regional Community Center.  The program will be based at Berkshire South in Great Barrington, but participants will explore the natural, recreational and cultural offerings found within the Housatonic River Valley through field trips, team building experiences and service-learning opportunities.  Hurry—space is limited!

The Pittsfield 4th of July Parade Committee is looking for volunteers to help make the July 4th Parade bigger and better than ever.

July 4th is a time for Pittsfield to celebrate our heritage as we proudly showcase the City of Pittsfield, with what is widely recognized as one of the finest 4th of July celebrations in America. While the exciting event occurs on a single day, the planning, preparation and fundraising takes nearly a whole year. Planning for the 2008 parade began almost immediately after this year’s successful march, by the all-volunteer Board and Parade Committee.

SUMMER CAMP SIGN-UPS BEING ACCEPTED

Great Barrington- Berkshire South Regional Community Center is now accepting registrations for all 2008 summer camp experiences for children in the southern Berkshire area.

Three different experiences are being offered for 5 different age groups. The return of the popular Bilingual Summer Camp (Campamento Accion Aventura) from June 23rd through August 29th is divided into three age groups: 5 and 6 year olds, 7 to 9 year olds and 10 to 12 year olds. Each week of activities will include a variety of team building games and activities including swimming, hiking, arts, cooking, gardening and dancing.

New this year is Berkshire Outdoor Adventure Teens (B.O.A.T.), a program for 13 and 14 year olds that runs from July 7th through August 1st. The 12 participants will explore the natural, recreational and cultural offerings found within the Housatonic River Valley through field trips, team building and service learning opportunities. This program is a collaboration between Berkshire South and the Housatonic River Museum.

Also new for aspiring actors 15 to 17 years old is a theatre and stage workshop called Rising Stars from August 11th to the 22nd. This workshop explores the performing arts with professionals from the Castle Hill Theatre Company. Spaces in this program are limited and are determined through an application process.

Yoga with a Jewish Twist at Congregation Ahavath Sholom more info

Chaya-Sharon Heller will be offering a monthly yoga class at Congregation Ahavath Sholom on North Street in Great Barrington. The classes will offer participants the chance to explore the weekly Torah portion filtered through the experience of yoga, breath, Hebrew chanting, deep relaxation, meditation and contemplation.
